Movie poster analysis

This is a film poster of Batman the Dark Knight which was released in July 2008. In this poster; everything is placed with a specific purpose and in my opinion is very effective.

Batman is shown in the foreground of the poster, this is an indication that he is the protagonist in the movie. The shadows masking Batman create a sense of enigma surrounding the character and also give the audience a subtle hint that he also possibly has a much darker side; this is supported by the title "Dark Knight". The physical strength of Batman can be seen in the prominent lines of his muscles.

The background is mostly  covered with a large city building; this shows the audience that it is set in an urban environment. On closer inspection, we can see that the building appears to be collapsing due to an explosion. This creates a sense of confusion and discord. The caption at the top of the poster "welcome to a world without rules" links very closely to the image of the destroyed building.

Probably one of the most striking things about this image is the Batman symbol. The symbol is shown just above half way up the building and appears to be on fire. It is the only hot color used in the poster and as a result it immediately draws the focus of the audience due to its striking contrast.
