- Sudden changes in music tempo.
- Jumpy, dramatic and scary music are played in many scenes, as they produce different moods and settings for thriller films.
- High pitched sounds/orchestral jolts, such as screeches.
- Quiet pieces which are soothing but also still have a defined and consistent beat to them. (This type of music is used to make the audience unsuspecting. This give a perfect opportunity for a jump scare). This type of music can cause a lot of tension and the tone/atmosphere.
- Slow music is sometimes used when a character is hiding, however, it wouldn't be used during a chase scene.
- Gun shots
- Screaming
- Heavy breathing
- Loud footprints
- Squeaky doors
- Electricity flickering
